UniverseAI started with VCA — video content analytics for government projects. The tech was solid. The product worked. We were ready.

But in Korea, there's a system called "조달" — government procurement. If you're a tech company without that certification, you don't get in. You go through a distributor. And that distributor takes a massive cut of your business.

That wasn't even the worst part. They called our product "just software" and crushed the price. Meanwhile, we were the ones building everything from scratch — every feature, every integration, every custom request. All the development cost was ours. All the margin was theirs.

I sat with that for months. Kept thinking — maybe we just need to push harder. Get the certification. Play the game. But the math never worked. The business model was broken at the foundation. No amount of business leadership was going to fix a structure designed to bleed us dry.

So we stopped knocking on that door.

We started researching where our technology could sell at scale — B2B, volume-based, without middlemen eating the margin. That's when we found it. A digital bank in Korea had built a facial payment terminal but needed recognition software to power it. We walked in, demonstrated the product, and after a year-long POC, we closed the deal.

That one reference changed everything. Today, we're fielding inbound calls from companies across multiple countries — projects we never had to chase.

Here's what I tell every business owner who's grinding against a wall: if the door won't open no matter how hard you knock — maybe it's not a door.

The best business decision I ever made wasn't pushing harder. It was walking away and finding the right entrance.

What's a wall that turned out to be a redirect for you?
