Alphabet's blowout quarter did not stop its stock from sliding. That contradiction defines this earnings season's split verdict on AI spending.

Alphabet's revenue rose 24% year-over-year, powered by a cloud unit that surged 82% in the quarter. Investors initially cheered those numbers, according to CNBC reports. Google shares reversed course during the analyst call, falling after executives raised 2026 capital expenditure guidance. The growth was real. The bill for more of it was the problem.

Tesla told a different story. Free cash flow turned negative and margins slid, and the company missed on earnings, according to Barron's reports. Tesla's cash burn came in smaller than analysts had feared, yet the stock fell anyway. Investors focused on the earnings miss, not the balance sheet relief.

Two AI leaders posted opposite headlines and got punished on opposite grounds. Alphabet's growth was undeniable, but the market balked at what it will cost to keep it going. Tesla's cash burn was less severe than dreaded, but that reassurance could not offset weaker profitability. Neither company got credit simply for being an AI story.

The lesson for readers is that AI enthusiasm no longer buys a pass on spending discipline or margin performance. Strong growth numbers and smaller-than-feared losses both failed to hold up a stock price this week. Wall Street is now pricing the cost side of AI as closely as the growth side, and that scrutiny cuts across winners and laggards alike.
