The AI trade's engine, semiconductor stocks, is stalling badly enough to drag the Nasdaq-100 toward correction territory. For an index that spent much of the past two years riding chip demand higher, that reversal is jarring.

Wall Street had treated chipmakers as the safest bet inside the AI boom. This week's selling suggests that confidence is cracking.

Micron's stock is sinking toward its worst monthly drop in 11 years, according to CNBC reports, as fears over China chip restrictions escalate. Corning tumbled 12% after its earnings report, a decline that pulled Marvell, Lumentum, AXT and Coherent down by double digits alongside it. ETFs tied to SK Hynix that are built to amplify the stock's moves were hammered as the broader chip wreck deepened, a sign that the pain is spreading beyond a single company or country.

South Korea's stock market felt it too. Its benchmark fell to a three-month low as the AI sell-off intensified, evidence that the damage is not confined to Wall Street. Chipmakers sit at the center of global supply chains, and a rout in Seoul echoes one in New York.

The common thread across Micron, Corning, and SK Hynix-linked funds is exposure to the same AI infrastructure bet that lifted the Nasdaq-100 for years. When that bet wobbles, it wobbles everywhere at once.

None of this means the AI buildout is over. It does mean the market's confidence in chip stocks as a one-way trade has taken a real hit. Investors watching the Nasdaq-100's approach to correction territory are watching a test of whether semiconductor demand can still justify the prices attached to it. The answer, for now, remains unsettled.
