Microsoft just posted the largest one-day market value gain in American corporate history.

Wall Street had expected another solid cloud quarter, not a record-shattering rally that reorders the AI trade overnight. Instead the numbers landed with force, splitting sentiment across Big Tech rather than lifting it uniformly.

Microsoft shares jumped as much as 15%, the biggest single-day percentage move in the stock's history. That surge added roughly $450 billion in market value, the largest one-day gain for any U.S. company ever, according to CNBC reports.

The advance did not stop at Microsoft. Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft together added nearly $1.5 trillion in combined market value this week, as strong Azure and Copilot growth reinforced confidence in Microsoft's AI spending. Meta shares fell about 8% in the same stretch, underscoring a split in how investors are treating AI spenders.

The gap between Microsoft and Meta signals a market growing more selective, not less enthusiastic, about the AI trade. Investors are rewarding evidence that AI spending is converting into revenue, not spending itself. Microsoft's record day shows how quickly that distinction can move real money.
